Legendary children’s show Blue Peter is actually phasing out cats and dogs in return for cool gadgets and modern technology to entice young people who are more enthusiastic about a Playstation 3 than a puppy.
The show just changed from London to the BBC’s brand new northern base at MediaCity in Salford, and animals are going to feature less and less on the show in the future. The target age range of audiences of Blue Peter is 6 – 12 year olds, and the show is fighting to keep the interest of kids away from devoted channels of children’s programming.
Just one of the Blue Peter animals went up north with the programme; current Blue Peter dog Barney is owned by presenter Helen Skelton and it will still feature on the program. The show’s 2 cats, Socks and Cookie, have gone to live in Hertfordshire in retirement enabling them to put their feet up and also spend their days kicking back in comfy cat beds, and Shelley the tortoise also did not move to the show’s completely new house.
Blue Peter has been famous for its pets and the charming incidents brought on by the creatures throughout the years, with many of the puppies and kittens that have been on the show getting more well-known when compared to the presenters! The idea behind featuring animals on the programme was to encourage those children who had animals to care for them properly and act as surrogate pets for those who did not have any.
